E Street Alley, San Diego CA

Print | Email

E Street is on E St. (simple enough, eh?) and between 4th and 5th ave. It's known for it's higher asian population, younger, 'ghetto' crowd when compared to other San Diego clubs. When we arrived there around 11p the line was short and the cover: $15. The actual establishment is below street level and you walk down these stairs into an alley before you get in the club. My initial impression was, "Wow bigger than I expected... and emptier." For a Saturday night in the Gaslamp the club seemed barren, although it did pickup later -- guess we were early. We all ordered some drinks at the bar and I decided to take a look around.

E Street has 2.5 dance floors. The reason I say 2.5 is because the 3rd dancefloor was more a part of the entry way. The two dance floors were relatively spacious with lots of seating/couches around the periphery. Each dancefloor had a full-service bar and different music: hip-hop/house, techno, pop-ish hip-hop. The main room we stayed in played really good hip-hop, and the DJ mixxed them non-stop for 3hrs. Occasionally 2 female go-go dancers would get onto the small cubes in the center of the dance floor, but they weren't amazingly hot. The techno/trance room wasn't too exciting.

Bathrooms were located away from the dancefloors so traffic wouldn't be too bad. Drinks were expensive, but average for the clubs in San Diego. Guys seemed to outnumber the girls 3 to 2, and had a little sliminess factor (kept trying to dance with some of my biatches j/k). Population was a generous mix of white, black, filipino, with less hispanic, chinese, etc. The biggest problem for the club is the sweltering heat. Being at basement level seems to prevent them from getting good ventilation. When the club started hopping around midnite, the place was like a sauna.

Overall it was a fun place to check out. I would go back again, although dress in thinner, cooler clothes. I'll need to try and snag some VIP cards cause $15 is hella expensive for me. Nice that they're open till 4am when other clubs close at 2am.
