On the "Star Trek" legacy of casting people of color: "I'm very proud to be part of a franchise that for the past 16 years has been very groundbreaking in representing ethnic diversity on television. ... But there is always room for improvement."
On the way "Star Trek" treats race or ethnicity: "The character that I play is Japanese, but that does not inform her actions or my choices as an actor as to what she does. ... That partly has to do with the way 'Star Trek' is -- that humankind acts almost as one nationality."
On the paucity of Asian American actors on television: "Our fight is just starting to surface. Now that we do see Asian actors, the biggest thing is to break out of stereotypes as some African American and some Latino actors have.
