Campaign to Reunite North Korean Mother and Daughter

Print | Email

On the night of December 29, 2001, twelve North Korean refugees were arrested near the Chinese side of Chinese-Mongolian border while trying to escape to Mongolia with the help of Chun Ki-Won, a North Korean refugee-aid worker, and his Chinese assistant. Ever since then, they have been in detention near Manzhouli, Inner Mongolia. The number of refugees is now 13 with a baby born in the prison right after their arrest.

Thanks to the humanitarian intervention on behalf of these people by the U.S. government and Congress, particularly Sen. Sam Brownback from Kansas and Rep. Henry Hyde from Illinois, Chun and his assistant, Mr. Jin Qi-Lung, have been sentenced to a fine (and deportation in case of Chun), a relatively light punishment. Chun will be deported very soon within a week. The American Congressmen kept intervening continuously for the refugees and we now have a good prospect for their release as well.

Two refugees in the group, Rhyu Mi-Hw (42, F) and Han Sol-Hee(17, F), have two uncles and three aunts in the US. They are all US citizens.

These family members and EXODUS 21, a North Korean refugee-relief network, have launched a campaign to bring the mother and her daughter to the US to be reunited with their loved ones in this great country of hope and freedom.

If your organization will mobilze your community members to call or fax the Congressmen and the State Department (the numbers are provided below) and show their support so that the necessary 'refugee status'(P-1 through P-5) is granted to these refugees by the State Department, it will be like giving them new lives who have gone through famine, escape from their Stalinist country, and harrassment by the Chinese authorities which crack down on these poor people on the run and send them back to North Korea where they will face a horrible persecution.

Your Name & address
Dear Hon. _____________,

I am writing to ask for the help for a group of North Koreans who may soon be deported by the Peoples of Republic of China. These eleven North Koreans and their leader Chun Ki-Won, were arrested last year by Chinese authorities while they were trying to enter Outer Mongolia through China. Among the group are two people who have relatives in the United States; they are the mother and daughter Rhyu Mi-Hwa(42, F) and Han Sol-Hee(17, F). The total number became thirteen when a baby was born while a mother was in captivity.

As you may well know, these North Koreans risked their lives in their attempt to escape the famine and the repression in North Korea. Without international pressure, they will surely be deported back to North Korea to an uncertain fate. Your help in any way will be most appreciated.

Very truly yours,
