NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION, NOVEMBER 8th AGAINST SOUTHEAST ASIAN DEPORTATION
Print | Email
Under the Immigration and Welfare Reform Act of 1996, all non-citizens convicted of “aggravated” felonies are subject to mandatory deportation. These 1996 laws also expanded the definition of an “aggravated felony” to include non-violent crimes (e.g possession of marijuana and shoplifting.) Under these new laws, more than twenty Cambodians already have been deported without trial.
U.S intervention in Southeast Asia in the 1960’s –1980’s was directly responsible for the plight of thousands of Southeast Asians, most of whom have sought refuge in the U.S from the violence at home. All of the deported Cambodians are refugees or children of refugees who fled Cambodia’s killing fields.
These U.S Deportations of Cambodian immigrants are continuing at an unprecedented rate, a trend that is likely to also affect Laotian and Vietnamese communities within in the U.S. Presently, Southeast Asian communities rank among the most impoverished ethnic groups within the U.S. The Deportations occurring in the Cambodian community highlight the discrimination, marginalization, and criminalization of all Southeast Asian communities.
